PA Week 5 Pressing as a unit

4 Corner cones, 4 scoring zone cones & 2 half way cones

Balls & 3 colours of Bibs

Be prepared so all equipment and balls and bibs are put out ready for players.

In Delta if we have sufficient equipment we will make 2 pitches accross the bays.

Be aware of any potential danger zones such as goals that may need to be zoned off.

For this weeks session it maybe wise to make the pitch slightly bigger if necessary (with groups of 4 per team)

Rondo style warm up

As players come in they go straight into Rondo’s, keeping the ball away from the defender.

Rules

No more than 3 touches

Ball must not be stopped

Poor pass, you go into the middle

Change player in the middle if poor pass, if they intercept a pass or 5 completed passes.

Rotate the group so everyone has a go in the middle.

When the group reaches 7 add 2nd defender in the middle.

Get the group to try and split the defenders (as shown above).

Part 2

Focus on the defenders working together…

Can they work as a team to win the ball back ?

Communication, 1 player forcing the play one way and teammate offering cover.

Roles reversed then as 2nd player forces the play back towards teammate.

Key Coaching Points

Patience – knowing when to try and win the ball and when to close down the space

Communication – Lead and cover players need to communicate

Speed – Reacting quickly if a player makes a poor pass or a mistake

 Step 1  front player closing off one option and teammate close enough to support, so this limits the number of passing options

Step 2 roles reversed with cover player now reacting to where the pass is made to and trying to force the play back towards teammate.

Step 3 when the time is right move quickly to intercept

The Drill Structure

Teams try to pass for 1 zone through the middle to the opposite end zone.

Ball cannot stop, pass must be on the ground

Leave players to play for a while so you can observe what players are coping or struggling with.

Phase 2

Focus on the middle 3 players

try to get them to stick to positions (left, right & middle)

They can go into try and win the ball (press) only if the ball is in their area and only 1 player can press at 1 time.

The 2 teammates must offer cover that is a) close enough to press if the ball moves into their zone and b) stop a pass through to an opponent

The end result should look something the image left, where the 3 players are working together .

1st player nearest to the ball is pressing, 2nd player is close enough to stop a pass but ready to close down if pass is made, 3rd cuts out pass to last player, but still close enough to help 2nd

3 Team game – no goal keepers

Ideally no more than 3 per team

1 goal scored rotate the teams

after 10 minutes let them all have a break name the teams – AC Milan, Juventus & Real Madrid have a mini tournament

1 point for a game won

Teams can only score with 1 touch finish inside the scoring zone

Add in 1 touch finish for older stronger players

and extra rules you see fit to use
